Echo and Narcissus in a mossy landscape

Echo & Narcissus

As to the origin of “Echo & Narcissus”, Warren’s love of old stories, myths and symbolist
narratives, are well represented on our site. What we find intriguing is the crossover between
stories and paintings as visual connectors, leaving expansive room for the stories to frame the
paintings, and the paintings the stories.

In the case of “Echo & Narcissus”, Echo is a nymph who was hopelessly in love with Narcissus,
but was rejected by him, fading away, until only the last two words of her utterances remained.
Narcissus hopelessly in love with his own reflection, dying unable to reach it, and eventually
becoming his namesake flower. Self-absorption is available to all and is ageless.
